The saudade of fado has much in common with the homesickness of bossa nova, beyond the fact that both use Portuguese. Because more than five thousand kilometers separate Rio Grande dol Norte (Brazil) from Santarém (Portugal), but listening to these two artists, it seems much less. As in that advertisement for Portuguese airlines starring the Brazilian Roberta Sá, as if warning that one day she would share the stage with the Portuguese Ana Moura. In complete harmony.
Ana Moura is the great renovator of fado in recent times. She has sold more than 300,000 records since her debut, two decades ago. The seventh and last of them, Casa Guilhermina (2022), has the virtue of adding Angolan rhythms (her mother and grandmother were from there), and it is one of the most audacious of a career that has not lacked for anything: collaborations and recognitions from the industry: Rolling Stones, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Prince himself, with whom she was close friends, worked with her, and among her many awards are the Amalia Rodrigues, the Globo de Ouro, the Sunday Times World Music or the Portuguese Music Award.
Roberta Sá is a young Brazilian singer who has also been releasing albums for two decades. Seven in total, which play at will with bossa nova, samba or Brazilian popular music. She was nominated for a Latin Grammy twice, in 2007 and 2017, in the categories of best new artist and best samba album. The latest of her works is Sambasá (2022), with collaborations with Zeca Pagodinho and Péricles, whose songs accumulate close to one million plays (in total) on streaming platforms such as Spotify.
