It is a cliché, but the paths of jazz are absolutely inscrutable in the hands of musicians like the Israeli Avishai Cohen, with his Afro-Caribbean show Iroko, or the American Louis Cole. That labels with so few prejudices as ECM or Blue Note (in the case of Cohen) or Brainfeeder and Ninja Tune (in the case of Cole) have published their works is already a sign of their commitment to an art that does not understand ties.
Always looking ahead. This is how the career of Avishai Cohen, the adventurous Israeli musician based in New York for more than two decades, has developed. Challenging the limits of genres. Starting from post bop and twisting the boundaries of contemporary jazz while groping the avant-garde, klezmer music or improvisation. His music is deeply evocative, random, in perpetual search for beauty where few dare to look for it. An experience that comes to Noches del Botánico with his show Iroko, a tribute to Afro-Caribbean music, in alliance with Puerto Rican percussionist Abraham Rodriguez Jr, drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez (also Cuban), Cuban saxophonist Yosvany Terry and Argentine trumpeter and trombonist Diego Urcola.
Louis Cole is a composer and multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles who became known in 2009, when the video clip of his song "Bank Account" went viral and was shared by Björk, John Mayer, Charlie Day and other celebrities. He usually doubles as the frontman of his jazzfunk project Knower (with Genevieve Artadi), but what brings him to Noches del Botánico is his brilliant solo career, which spans six albums. The last of them is Quality Over Opinion (2022), the most complete of his career, marked by influences as disparate as Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, The Beach Boys, Boards of Canada, The Beatles or Skrillex, in a formula so unclassifiable as to flirt with jazz, pop, funk, electronica or even grindcore.
At Noches del Botánico we believe that there is no age to enjoy culture, that is why all minors can access the venue regardless of their age. They must access with their corresponding ticket and accompanied by their father, mother or legal guardian.
