There are no boundaries of any kind in this double program. On the one hand, the peculiar fusion of Balkan folk, gypsy brass, Bosnian sevdalinka, Greek rembetiko or Jewish klezmer by the legendary Bosnian Serb musician Goran Bregoviç. On the other, the mix of funk, disco, dub, folk and electronic music of the Neapolitans Nu Genea. World music? Without a doubt. Here and now, more than ever.
It is no exaggeration to say that no one has exported the sound of the Balkans better during the last decades than Goran Bregoviç. And not precisely because he represents Serbia at Eurovision 2010. But because his music, as a whole, is synonymous of fanfare, of celebration, of brotherhood between peoples, of verbena in the most popular and noble of senses. His songs have toured half the world, and his determination to adapt to multiple environments and stage formats have turned this veteran Bosnian Serb guitarist, composer, arranger and producer into an irreplaceable musician. His peculiar fusion of Balkan folk, gypsy brass, Bosnian sevdalinka, Greek rembetiko or Jewish klezmer has made his proposal one of the most recognizable world music (to reformulate that old label of world music), throughout a fertile and multidisciplinary career in which Bregoviç has collaborated with musicians such as Scott Walker, Iggy Pop, Ofra Haza, Cesária Évora, Gypsy Kings, Eugene Hutz (Gogol Bordello) or Stephan Eicher.
Nu Genea is a project led from Naples (Italy) by Lucio Aquilina and Massimo Di Lena, which fuses funk, disco, dub, folk, electronic and world music with a commendable fluency. They used to call themselves Nu Guinea. Their latest album is Bar Mediterraneo (2021), brilliant last chapter of a career that took off after their alliance with Tony Allen - drummer of Fela Kuti - in that The Tony Allen Experiments (2015), and that has toured the world since then with a warm and seductive formula. Mediterranean made music. Directly.
