They are two torrents of ideas. And two scenic gales. The overwhelming independent rock of León Benavente and the irresistible mix of pop, folk, hip hop and electronic music of Instituto Mexicano del Sonido. Different tools, same purpose: to impress, shake and even make the audience dance.
Cured for years in previous bands, León Benavente became since 2013 one of the most solid combos of the Spanish indie scene. On a precise and powerful rhythmic base they have cemented a discography that drinks from pop, rock, kraut and even electronica. The Galician Abraham Boba, the Maño Eduardo Baos, the Asturian Luis Rodríguez and the Murcian César Verdú debuted with the impressive León Benavente (2013), endorsed by rocky live performances that attested to their previous experience in other projects (accompanying Nacho Vegas, in most cases). And they had no problem in giving it continuity with the also splendid 2 (2016), Vamos a volvernos locos (2019) and the overwhelming ERA (2022), in which they reinforce the electronic component of songs that were born to sweep live.
The international projection of recent Mexican pop and its patina of renovation would not be understood without Camilo Lara and his Mexican Institute of Sound. He has fused pop with folk, hip hop or electronica, and always with exciting results. In his debut, Mexico Maxico (2006), he already showed his expertise in quoting Esquivel with elements of dub, cumbias, cha cha chas or electronic rhythms. And in subsequent works such as Piñata (2007), Soy Sauce (2009), Político (2012), Disco popular (2017) or Distrito Federal (2021), he was consolidating a discourse that has also deviated at times until his intelligent and ingenious adaptation to Spanish of Morrissey's songs in the side project Mexrrissey.
