The Pan-American feeling, the cultural brotherhood between the different peoples of Latin America, is superbly embodied in Rubén Blades and Gaby Moreno. He is as important for salsa as Bob Marley was for reggae or Fela Kuti for afrobeat. A huge ambassador of the style, lately more interested in swing. She is an admirable assimilator of styles such as blues, jazz, soul, but also of border sounds, boleros, joropos, calypso and tropicalisms.
Rubén Blades' concerts are usually long, sometimes approaching three hours, but they are extraordinary lessons not only in music but also in life. Authentic master classes on how to approach art and existence itself, which in his case are one and the same thing. He usually approaches them in the company of Roberto Delgado's stupendous big band (almost 20 musicians, with the primacy of his powerful brass section), and this Salswing Tour, which is a recognition of the Latin origins of jazz and the mutual influences between son, music with Afro-Caribbean key and swing, in tune with the homonymous album he released in 2021, is no exception. A new crossroads in the inexhaustible journey of a musician who, at 74, refuses to say goodbye to the stage. Lucky for all of us.
Guatemalan Gaby Moreno embodies like few other artists a global and pan-American idea of music, which feeds on blues, jazz, soul or r'n'b, but also on border sounds, boleros, joropos, calypso, tropicalism or singer-songwriter songs. A good example of this is the extraordinary ¡Spangled! (2019), an album in which, managing with ease in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and with the company of the legendary arranger and composer Van Dyke Parks or the no less legendary Jackson Browne, he raised a monument to the Latin American musical richness. Or the more recent Alegoría (2022), the seventh album of a career during which he has collaborated and toured with Tracy Chapman, Ani Difranco or Hugh Laurie, combining the poetic and the popular.
