Just in 1977, when Tito Nieves was partnering with Héctor Lavoe in New York, Alain Pérez was born in Cuba. Tonight's double bill is the past, present and even the future of salsa, in a triple connection between Puerto Rico, New York and Cuba.
Puerto Rican Tito Nieves is one of the legends of salsa music since he moved to New York in the late seventies and worked with Héctor Lavoe and his Orchestra in 1977. A veteran musician, in 1987 he began a solo career that spans more than thirty albums, most of them released on Ralph Mercado's New York label RMM, and songs as celebrated worldwide by fans of the genre as "El amor más bonito", "Sonámbulo" or "De mí enamórate". It is salsa as a vehicle of emotions and also as a school of life.
Alain Pérez is a Cuban bassist, percussionist, pianist, singer, composer and arranger, a strong advocate of salsa, timba and Latin jazz. He has worked with historical musicians of his country such as Los Van Van, Paquito D' Rivera, Celia Cruz or Isaac Delgado (who gave him the backing by inviting him in 1996 to be part of the Havana cabaret, of which he would become musical director) and Spaniards such as Paco de Lucia, Diego "El Cigala", Concha Buika, Niño Josele or Enrique Morente, with whom he devised the project "Africa-Cuba-Cai" in 2002, a meeting between flamenco, Cuban music and Senegalese rhythms. His concept of salsa is fully contemporary, complex but at the same time popular, endowed with social observations.
