Personality, distinction and finesse are among the virtues of Zaz, one of the great figures of French pop of the last decade thanks to her way of taking advantage of the best of swing, chanson and jazz manouche in an unblemished discography. The same that adorn the career of Céu, one of the great renovators of Brazilian music with her exquisite balance between bossa nova, trip hop sui generis and subtle electronica. Two women with much in common, despite the more than 8,000 kilometers that separate them.
The French Isabelle Geffroy has always moved with ease and elegance between chanson, pop, swing and jazz manouche. She is as much a fan of Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby McFerrin or Richard Bona as she is of Django Reinhardt or Vivaldi. And that has allowed him to become a star in his country, over a decade in which he has sold millions of copies of his nine albums to date. Her echo has also reverberated in Spain, especially following the release of Recto Verso (2013), which was the album that raised her to prominence. Intuitive and spontaneous, the artist from Tours (daughter of a Spanish teacher) always performs live with a lot of class. She arrives at Noches del Botánico still getting good results from Isa (2021), which is her latest work to date, re-released a few months ago with bonus material.
Céu is one of the great female voices in the musical renewal of Brazil in the last decade. A woman who professes the same admiration for Billie Holiday, Lauryn Hill, Björk or Erykah Badu as for Jorge Ben or Astrud Gilberto. His fifth album, APKÁ! (2020), was a delight that combined bossa effluvia aerated on soft electronic wefts, alternating between dub radiations and a suggestive polyrhythm that looks to Africa and a tropical onirism that sometimes sounds like a new trip hop with a Carioca mold.A year later he went to the other extreme of his discourse with Acustico (2021), an austere album in which he gave new life to classics by Beastie Boys, Jimi Hendrix, Fiona Apple, Rita Lee or Milton Nascimento, rounding off a career that has brought him three Latin Grammys and nine other nominations.
