THE BOOKS OF MADRID
VisitMadrid is a very literary city. Its streets have filled hundreds of pages and great authors have lived there. But what about its bookstores? The city is full of exquisite corners where books are the main protagonists. We tell you about some of them:
The Calle de los Libreros is one of the necessary stops on any trip to Madrid, it was the writer Pío Baroja who proposed this name, and finally adopted it because it was where most of those who were dedicated to the sale of old books settled. From the time of the Central University until today, it is the area where university students buy and sell their books.
This street, located in the heart of the capital, linking Calle de la Estrella with La Gran Vía, has not only been the source of inspiration for Bécquer's Rimas, it was also the scene of the murder of María Luz Nájera, a student who died during a demonstration in 1977. These magical spaces where you can find authentic gems are not limited to Calle de los Libreros, they have spread throughout the capital.
Are you a fan of second-hand books with out-of-print copies, or very old editions of classic works? We recommend Re-Read, on Calle de O'Donell; Tik Books, on Calle de Alcalá and it is definitely worth spending a Sunday morning strolling along the Cuesta de Moyano where you will find different stands dedicated to antique and second-hand books.
Looking for an original proposal? One of the most groundbreaking proposals is the one you can find in La Casquería, a stall in the Mercado de San Fernando, Calle de Embajadores 41, where you can buy your books by weight, like someone who buys apples. Be careful, this time you will not take home a piece of poisoned fruit but some of the great works of literature that await at their counters sorted by subject.

Librería Mujeres is one of the most special bookstores in the capital. It has been in operation for more than 40 years and its clear intention is "to be around for another 40, at least". It was born almost at the same time as the Constitution, when more than two hundred women came together to create a space where women's literature would have a place. A few years later they also created their own publishing house. It is one of the reference bookstores in feminism and houses jewels of some of the best works published by women in the history of literature. A necessary space in this struggle that still occupies us.
