On 2 July it was all about guitars and virtuosity again. Although on a quite different plane to the one offered by Jeff Beck, but once again with the six strings as the main protagonists of the day.
The first performance was by Twanguero, who, armed with his guitar, gave a recital of indescribable quality at the Zona Club Alhambra. He is undoubtedly one of the best guitarists in Spain, although he seems to have been born among cactus and Arizona desert dust...
From his hand we went through 'Carreteras Secundarias' and some other classics as the night was falling.
A few minutes after 22:00 the incomparable Pat Metheny appeared on the stage of the Jardín Botánico . Owner and master of the best jazz guitar performance of the present times. He started the evening with his famous Pikasso guitar, with 42 strings and extreme difficulty. From it Metheny knows how to extract subtleties, rhythms and impossible harmonics and, with it alone, both on stage, made it clear that what was to follow at Noches del Botánico was going to be worth remembering.
He was accompanied by his inseparable Antonio Sánchez on drums, Linda Oh on double bass and Gwilym Simcock on piano. With them he performed some of his best-known compositions over the course of two and a half hours, and with each of them he performed duets that were applauded by the audience.
It was an epic concert last night from the winner of no less than 20 Grammy Awards and the 2018 Nea Jazz Masters, the highest award given in the United States to jazz musicians.
And for dessert, there was even time for anecdotes: the painter Gustavo Gil was able to give a portrait he had painted to the artist himself, who was delighted to receive it. A great man, both musically and personally.
